Subject: Urgent Letter of Appeal to Stop Mining Plans in Libertad, Antique
HON. PAOLO EVERARDO S. JAVIER
Representative
Province of Antique
Philippines
Dear Congressman Javier,
I am writing to you as a fellow Antiqueno deeply concerned about the kind of environment we are going to pass on to our children, grandchildren and those yet to be born. You and I are aware of the planned mining operations in San Roque, Libertad, Antique. I fervently hope that we both share the same stand regarding this issue, that is, to fight hard to preserve this beautiful, God-given landscape.
It is very clear to your people that the proposed mining site is grossly inappropriate. Proclamation Number 186 declared this area as Northwest Panay Peninsula Natural Park for a very important reason: it is home to a variety of flora and fauna that can be found only in these areas and must be protected. Mining activities in this area would guarantee the loss of one of the very few remaining low-elevation rainforest in the Philippines.
The negative impacts on the air quality, water quality and the very lives of the families residing in the area and beyond are a few of the reasons why I strongly oppose the mining plans. Just recently, I read in the news that public officials in Romblon made a strong stand and political will to defend their environment. In fact, Romblon Governor Eduardo Firmalo issued Executive Order Number 1 imposing an indefinite ban on metallic mining in the province. I believe it should be no different in the Province of Antique.
I call on you earnestly to please support and enforce Proclamation Number 186 and help ensure the preservation of this protected site for generations to come.
Sincerely,
Maila Emen
